Someone emailed me this article and enjoyed the read. As a member of a "house church" and been involved in "house churches" for the better part of 4 years now I almost would rather the conventional churches didnt like us actually. I was the mainstream denom church for 25+ years and wouldnt want to align myself with that ever again truthfully. Dont get me wrong there are plenty of great people and good "churches" out there and we by far dont have it "right". But as Dan Kimball wrote so well, they like Jesus and not the church. One of our discussions lately was about the denial of "church" as opposed to the acceptance of Christ. Christian used to be a noun, now its an adjective. And that adjective has tons of wrong implicated in it. church, Christian, protestant, etc, etc. All words I dont care to defend anymore or reclaim for that matter.

What do you do on Sunday? Umm meet with friends, have coffee and have discussions.

Do you attend church? No, I believe I am a part of something much bigger than that word church.

Jesus follower? Not sure I want any word associated with me other than hey that guy, that group they love, accept, and are genuine. They are actually trying to act like Jesus did.

I dont know, maybe I have it all wrong, but I definitely like this conversation and watching it move and grow day to day.

Becky,

Jason's favorite artist is Ray LaMontagne, and you can totally hear it. I thought his song last night sounded a lot like "Empty."

Usually I feel like such a music snob around AI, but this is pretty cool.

Cheers.

YES! We totally have the same taste in Idol contestants.

My ranking as of last night is 1. Jason 2. David 3. Michael. Although at this point it's anyone (of those three)'s game.

Jason's performance rocked my face right off.

Seems people are voting more with their eyes than their ears! I hope she finds that comment funny!

Sanjaya...LOL.

Finally watched my DVR'd AI this morning and would have to agree that Jason (the Dreaded Idol) is FABULOUS! I've even considered downloading his song from iTunes!

This really maybe an exciting season of AI! (They really need a redemptive season after the whole Sanjaya ruckus!!)

It was difficult to read this. I tried to be charitable, but understand what's being said here. In essence -

There are bad house churches.
There are bad conventional churches.

House churches worship, pray, disciple, teach, have community and accountability, etc.
Conventional churches worship, pray, disciple, teach, have community and accountability, etc.

Apparently these pastoes view a building as requirement for genuine discipleship, accountability, etc.

I don't see any other way they came to their conclusion?

BTW I'm reading Jim and Casper Go To Church. Jim pays this atheist to go to 12 churches around the country. And they write about it. Saddleback, Imago Dei, Mars Hill, Lawndale, Lakewood, Willow Creek, etc. Casper the atheist felt most at home...and what seemed most real to him was a 15 person house church.

I don't know if a house church would be my thing, but they are 100% Biblically and historically legit.

Cheers.

There are some REALLY BAD house churches. Let's assume maybe somewhere between 23-40% of them. That might lend a bit of context to the assessments of these pastors.

That's a narrow interpretation, but I'm attempting to be kind.

I won't comment on the percentage of really bad conventional churches.

"Shut up!" That cracks me up! The accountability question just seems bizarre to me. To quote Brother Maynard, "what is never explained is why the people at the top of the pyramid can have peer accountability while everyone else is accountable up the line rather than to peers. Accountability up the line never works out as mutual accountability… it always leaves one person in the relationship with the power and the other person as the accountable one." (Sorry I have not made any attempt to answer your question)! :P
